Partial replacement of soybean meal with soybean silage and responsible soybean meal in lactating cows diet: part 2, environmental impact of milk production

چکیده
Soybean meal, the main protein source for livestock in Italy, is associated with high environmental impact terms of land use change. Thus alternative sources are advisable. The study aimed to evaluate through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach milk production systems characterised by different diets lactating cows including soybean. Four scenarios were identified: (1) conventional soybean meal (CON), (2) and silage (SBS), 3) responsible defined FEFAC guidelines (CON + RSM), (4) (SBS RSM). Inventory data derived from previous vivo trial on farmer interviews. Secondary obtained ECOINVENT® Agri-footprint databases. LCA was performed using SimaPro V 8.3. showed higher global warming potential (GWP), marine eutrophication human toxicity compared lucerne hay, most utilised self-produced feed, due contribution mechanical operations field. Replacing dietary soybean meal with canola meal improves production and efficiency of lactating dairy cows.
Previous research suggested that crude protein (CP) from canola meal (CM) was used more efficiently than CP from solvent soybean meal (SBM) by lactating dairy cows. We tested whether dietary CP content influenced relative effectiveness of equal supplemental CP from either CM or SBM. Fifty lactating Holstein cows were blocked by parity and days in milk into 10 squares (2 squares with ruminal can...
متن کاملMilk Production and Composition, and Intake of Holstein Lactating Cows Fed Diets with Partial Substitution of Soybean Meal with Flaked Field Pea
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a partial substitution of soybean meal with field pea (Pisum sativum) in Holstein lactating dairy cow diets on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, rumen ammonia-N concentration and pH. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned into three groups based on parity, days in milk, and mil...
متن کاملEffects of Supplementing Xylose‐Treated Soybean Meal or Untreated Corn Gluten Meal to Lactating Dairy Cows
This experiment was performed to investigate whether feeding xylose-treated soybean meal (XSBM) or corn gluten meal (CGM) is economically better under field conditions. Ninety-four multiparous early lactating Holstein cows (55±5 days in milk and 2.82±0.41 body condition score) were used in a completely randomized design. Cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: XSBM or CGM as the m...
متن کاملEffects of grass silage and soybean meal supplementation on milk production and milk fatty acid profiles of grazing dairy cows.
The effects of supplementation with grass silage and replacement of some corn in the concentrate with soybean meal (SBM) on milk production, and milk fatty acid (FA) profiles were evaluated in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square study using 16 dairy cows grazing pasture composed of ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and white clover. Each experimental period lasted for 3 wk. The 4 dietary treatments wer...
متن کاملEffects of replacing soybean meal with canola meal and decreasing crude protein on milk production and nutrient utilization of dairy cows in early lactation
This study investigated the effects of replacing soybean meal (SM) with canola meal (CM) and decreasing crude protein (CP) levels in CM based diets on performance of dairy cows when different sources of processed grains and CM were used. Canola meal was untreated or roasted at 130°C for 30 minutes and grains sources (corn and barley) were either ground or steamed-flaked. Eight Holstein cows (...
